Does the work you do match

your needs, passions and personality?

YOUR WORK, HAPPINESS, HEALTH AND INCOME

Work that is meaningful to YOU is essential to your happiness. Enjoyable, purposeful work is so related to your health that sages through the ages have called work “Nature’s Physician.” The happier you are when you’re working, the more successful you’ll be in all of your relationships. People who whistle while they work almost always make more money.

Whether you’re self-employed or you work for an organization, the first step is to discover what you’re truly passionate about. When you discover how you want to share your unique and special talents with the world, you’ll feel compelled to joyfully pour your energy, ambition and soul into your passion. Your life purpose will pull you forward with so much focus and bliss that your “work” will become play.

WHEN YOUR WORK AND LIFE PURPOSE DON’T MATCH

What if your existing work tasks, focus and environment aren’t consistent with your passion and life purpose? As you continue to read material from the #1 Bestselling book, “Joy on the Job — Over 365 Ways to Create the Joy and Fulfillment You Deserve,” some of you will discover a creative way to re-shape your current work environment so that it supports your passion and life purpose.

You’ll negotiate with a boss, team or coworker so you can do tasks that please you instead of struggling with frustration or boredom. Many of my clients who are entrepreneurs make more money once they decide to follow their hearts instead of playing it safe doing what they think they’re “supposed to do”. Many clients who work in a corporate environment gain a promotion when they courageously and creatively ask for what they want.

By the way, most employees who grumble about executives and managers don’t perceive how unhappy leadership personnel are when they know their management style isn’t producing positive results. Although their jobs look comfortable, many go to work every day fearing they’ll lose their position in today’s lean and mean economy. When leadership personnel truly understand how meaning, purpose and happiness at work escalate productivity, they learn to balance their bottom-line, results-oriented personality with strategies that help their employees shine. Of course, as their leadership style changes, their own job satisfaction soars.

WHERE WILL YOUR JOURNEY TO JOY LEAD YOU?

After reading this series of articles, some of you will wave goodbye to your present work setting and thrive in greener pastures. You’ll use your current position and contacts to design a strategic plan that honors your special talents and desires.

Some of you will make a bold leap into self-employment because you’re keenly aware of your life purpose and passion. The people who do this usually already have the resources they need for a smooth transition, including a financial cushion to support them.

However, most people need a step-by-step transition plan. The majority of the clients who come to me say, “I don’t know what I want. I just know it’s not what I’m doing.” If you’re in this group, take advantage of the exercises I provide you to gain awareness of your passion and life purpose. Then you’ll excitedly and confidently craft a compelling vision and you’ll thoughtfully set realistic goals. You’ll inventory your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and obstacles. Because you’ll enjoy creating an action plan that’s self-motivating, you’ll avoid the trap of procrastination.

Of course, there are no mistakes in life. Where we are now is always the perfect steppingstone toward where we want to be. One of my clients discovered that her “boring job” is a gift in disguise. She’s writing a novel she’s passionate about and she needs income to support herself before the checks from selling her book begin stacking up. She grins, “Right now, I’m happy doing repetitive, unchallenging tasks at work because it gives me time and energy to think about the characters in my novel during most of my work day. My company wins because I’m getting the tasks done. I win because I’m getting paid while my mind is creating fascinating twists and turns in my book’s plot. Every night I go home with new ideas. Because my job is low stress, I have plenty of energy to write at night.”

Other clients are grateful they’ve learned a lot about what they don’t want to do for a living. Here’s a typical comment, “Now that I’m clear about what work tasks fit me, it’s like I’m finally wearing a shoe that’s the perfect size. I’m strolling forward with ease instead of stumbling along in pain because of a poor fit.”

I’m going to help you mine all of the hidden nuggets of gold from your current position, fully exploring your strengths and weaknesses. As one of my clients said when she landed a new position, “Taking the time to identify my strengths and weaknesses and resolve old conflicts gave me freedom for a brand new work life I love. I didn’t cart my old baggage to my new work environment. Now I’m enjoying a whole new fun set of challenges instead of having to work with the same old problems over and over.”
